Oranges Are Not the Only Fruit
by Jeanette Winterson
Review by Sarah
I loved this book for its intensity. Winterson looks back on her upbringing through the lens of fiction with this debut novel. It interweaves fairy tales and biblical narrative to reflect the interconnectedness and confusion of faith and identity. Having the perspective of the narrator be that of a child growing into a young woman was integral to understanding her internal conflict and disorientation as she becomes ostracised from the evangelical church. A heartbreakingly beautiful novel I will never forget.
