Greta and Valdin
by Rebecca K Reilly
Review by Bel
What a breath of fresh air for Kiwi literature! Such vivid characters, and what a perfectly imperfect family! This novel is a window into the life of a tertiary-educated, multi-cultural, queer twenty-something in urban New Zealand.
Reilly’s writing is whip smart, both joyful and snarky as hell, political without being overly earnest. It reminded me of Oscar Wilde – a modern-day comedy of manners. The dialogue is tight & snappy – everyone’s quick witted! I laughed out loud again and again. An absolute delight to see Auckland so vividly on the page too. Don’t miss this brilliant debut.
