Going ‘up the lake’ is a catchphrase for generations of Nelson and Marlborough children, excited by a tramp, fishing trip or perhaps just a picnic and swim at Lake Rotoiti. For Annette Walker, as a young girl, it was the thought of finding ‘creepy crawlies’ under old sacks she had laid in beech forest at the family bach, one of the first at Rotoiti.
This book, full of journeys and discoveries, comes after years of visiting museums and libraries nationwide. Annette has gathered more than 70 interviews, and much of the social history is not recorded anywhere else.
