Ultimate Spider-Man v1: Married With Children
by Jonathan Hickman
Review by Sam

What would happen if Spider-Man was never bitten by a radioactive spider?

In the new Ultimate Universe, Peter Parker is a normal photographer in his mid-30s with a wife and children, looking for a way to make a difference. Soon, his opportunity comes, and we watch as he grapples with newfound powers and existing responsibilities.

Hickman's storytelling abilities are on full display here, with the kind of expert pacing that comes from decades of experience. His take on Spider-Man retains the humour of earlier versions, but adds a touch of maturity and 'put-togetherness' to the character that is very refreshing. Beyond this, the story really shines through its supporting cast, particularly with Uncle Ben and Jonah Jameson who we follow as ground-level journalists. These contrasting plots between Spider-Man and his uncle are surprisingly well-balanced and engaging. Additionally, Peter's lackluster attempts to juggle a secret identity while raising two children provide some much-needed levity amid the central mystery plot.

As well as a great storyline, Hickman's 'Ultimate Spider-Man' really captures the attention and imagination of the reader with dynamic and expressive art. The impact of every punch, kick, and throw comes through viscerally. Of particular interest is the use of colour, with scenes leaning heavily into specific colour palettes, providing a beautiful cohesiveness that works in tandem with the events happening on the pages.

This volume is both an excellent starting point for newer readers of Spider-Man, or for those who are familiar with the character. Highly recommended.
