Building off the events of the 2016 Secret Wars crossover event and the original Ultimate Universe, Ultimate Invasion follows a new universe created by The Maker, shaped to ensure that the heroes of the Marvel world will never rise up to stop him. The Maker stops Spider-Man from ever being bitten, brainwashes the Hulk into being his bodyguard, and sets up the governments of the world to support his plans. However, his hand-built world is not as stable as he believes.
This debut event in the new Ultimate Universe sets the stage for Ultimate Spider-Man, Black Panther, X-Men, and Wolverine, introducing new characters and the world that they live in. Jonathan Hickman, a seasoned professional writer in the comics world, is working at full capacity to breathe life into an exciting and fresh take on the heroes we know and love.
While this comic will appeal to readers with a deep understanding of the Marvel status quo, Hickman does a great job of introducing new ideas at a steady pace that never gets too hard to follow. Given the success of the Ultimate Spider-Man comic run in particular, this is a fantastic series to dive into and follow as it grows. Highly recommended for old fans of the Marvel universe, or those looking for something new to try.
