Sharks are ancient, apex predators, and are both loved and demonised. There are over 500 species and sizes can vary from 17cm to the largest fish in the world – the whale shark which can reach up to 12m in length. Between 70-100 million sharks per year are killed by people. Many of these sharks are critical to healthy marine ecosystems.
Sharks can be large, small, loved, or feared. As part of an ancient group of fish, sharks are vital for healthy marine ecosystems. All of these sharks call NZ waters home. From top to bottom: black tipped reef, white tip, great white, whale, hammerhead, basking, thresher* and mako*.
