making ceramics, artist Tracy Keith (Ngapuhi) explores the interconnections
between people, place, and te taiao, the natural world.
Remember
Industry builds on a
solo exhibition held at Te Whare Toi o Heretaunga Hastings Art Gallery from
2024-25. As a title, Remember Industry is a directive and a lament, an
invitation to recall the people and labour that shaped post-war Aotearoa, and
histories of small towns such as Tokoroa, where the artist grew up in a
community shaped by the local pulp and paper mill.
Developed
in close collaboration with the artist, the book is the first to closely
examine Keith’s career and practice. Designed by Ebony Holt, it translates
Keith’s ongoing research and making – his dialogue with materials such as clay,
timber, and fire – into a printed form. Remember Industry features newly
commissioned writing that traces the histories and relationships underpinning Keith’s
work, along with extensive photography of his ceramics, artist sketches, and
documentation of his studio and firing processes.
