This is a collection of papers by senior Maori academics who are experts and have considerable mana in their chosen fields. The ten contributing authors, who are academics at Massey University, discuss the Maori language, marae, religion, the Treaty of Waitangi, the State and Maori, citizenship education, mental health, the health workforce, kaitiakitanga and horticulture. The book discusses Maori development and contemporary issues concerning Maori, both from the authors’ perspectives and across different disciplines.
Huia Tomlins-Jahnke (Ngati Kahungunu, Ngati Toa Rangatira, Ngai Tahu, Ngati Hine) is Associate Professor of Maori Education at Massey University. Her research interests include Maori and indigenous development, indigenous research methodologies, the ethics of knowledge production, and Maori education. Malcolm Mulholland (Ngati Kahungunu ki Wairarapa) is a researcher at Te Putahi-a-Toi, School of Maori Studies at Massey University. He authored the award-winning Beneath the Maori Moon, edited State of the Maori Nation and He Wairere Pakihi and co-edited Maori and the Environment and Weeping Waters.
