Flower in the Attic
By Virginia Andrews
Review by Isabelle
This book scandalized a generation back in the eighties, and it's still making us gasp and grimace to this day. I read this book out of the morbid curiosity to see what all the fuss was about and was violently pulled into the tragic tale of the Dollanganger siblings who get hidden away in the attic of their mother's luxurious childhood home while they wait for their aging Grandfather to die.
My consensus: I thoroughly enjoyed it, but the way you'd enjoy picking at a scab until it came free. Sickening, fascinating and at times genuinely painful - and I'd still recommend the hell out of it! To a certain audience, anyway. This one isn't for the faint of heart, or for readers who can't enjoy purple prose. If you want to read a rollercoaster ride of abuse, isolation, and incest with the drama dial turned up to eleven, Flowers In The Attic is for you.
