Wow! The story of one of Welcome to Night Vale’s most infamous residents, finally told. A swashbuckling, chilling thriller of a novel that leaves you breathless and exhilarated. I adored this wonderful book.

Switching between the Old Woman’s present as she haunts a young man and her past, we get to see her slow and steady descent into villainy. Her two selves start off black and white, before blurring together. She claws to the tiny fragments of her humanity before throwing off her old self with a flourish, reveling in the chaos that is to come.

While I was tangentially familiar with the iconic horror podcast that is the source for this fascinating character, you definitely don’t need to be in order to be invested. The only thing that it really changed was that I was able to pick up on a few references to other characters. If you don’t know the podcast, fear not! All you need to know is that Night Vale is a spooky desert town somewhere in America where supernatural shenanigans are commonplace.

This is a fantastic book, reminiscent of ghost stories you’d tell around a campfire. Perfect for fans of Ballad of Black Tom, Thirteen Storeys and The Old Woman With The Knife.
