This handsome new book comprises 200 black and white photographs of New Zealanders dancing Argentine tango as it is still danced in the dancehalls of Buenos Aires. The style bears little relation to tourist cliches. It focuses not on dancers’ feet, but on their faces, and reveals the intensity of the dance and afficionados’ delight in it. The photographs were taken at milongas (dances) up and down the country over the last five years. They are punctuated with quotations from high-profile tango dancers – mainly Argentinian – and others on the essential nature of the dance connection. In a divided world they offer moments of hope.
