In the dark, uncanny world of Dead Ends, our ghosts live alongside us, break ups come with a grisly cost, and there really are monsters under the bed. Laura Borrowdale’s sophomore collection is full of the horrors of domestic banality, parenting, relationships, and womanhood. With deft and exacting prose, Borrowdale’s stories reflect our own lives back at us told slant, revealing where something sinister lives just beneath the surface.

Dead Ends
By Laura Borrowdale
Review by Josh

A masterfully crafted collection of short stories, each one a nugget of gold, beautifully crafted and densely layered. Characters range from small children scared of the monsters under the bed, to post-apocalyptic vegetable farmers trying to survive. With many stories set in the second person, the reader is thrust head-first into the worlds Laura creates and left to stew in their intricate darkness. Themes of separation, over-reaching parents, womanhood, and guilt are woven throughout the sharply edged stories with great care. Laura Borrowdale is an author of immense talent, as this collection of work will prove to all daring enough to read.
