From humble beginnings, following the donation of a former Logging Locomotive in 1964, members of the Canterbury Branch of the New Zealand Railway & Locomotive Society, forerunner of the present-day Canterbury Railway Society, were prompted to find a suitable location to develop an operating railway and museum. The location which became available was aptly situated on the site of New Zealand’s first public railway, at Ferrymead on the banks of the Heathcote River, which opened in December 1863; the Ferrymead Railway is the most historic site on the Railways of New Zealand. This book is a record looking back over 60 years of development, restoration, and operations of the Ferrymead Railway which is operated and maintained by a team of dedicated, enthusiastic, volunteers of the Canterbury Railway Society Incorporated. The Ferrymead Railway today boasts one of the most historic and extensive collections of rolling stock which cover over 150 years of development of the railways of New Zealand
