‘The 11th Asia Pacific Triennial of Contemporary Art’ marks the beginning of this series’ fourth decade as the leading exhibition of new art from the region. The 11th Triennial includes the work of 70 artists, collectives and projects from more than 30 countries, including Dana Awartani (Saudi Arabia / Palestine), Brett Graham (Aotearoa New Zealand), D Harding (Australia), Mit Jai Inn (Thailand), Kikik Kollektive (The Philippines), Saodat Ismailova (Uzbekistan), Dawn Ng (Singapore), Yeung Tong Lung (Hong Kong) and Haus Yuriyal (Papua New Guinea).
This Triennial also includes regionally co-curated projects surveying work by Nepalese artists and Indigenous communities; recent works from Mindanao and the Sulu Archipelago in the Philippines; an immersive installation by Dreamcast Theatre and the KAWAKI women’s collective from The Solomon Islands; and a showcase of weavings by artists from five islands in Vanuatu’s Torba Province. A total of more than 500 works by 200 individual creative voices are showcased.
This vibrant, fully illustrated publication features texts on all artists and projects included in the exhibition. QAGOMA Asian and Pacific art curators Abigail Bernal, Ruha Fifita, Reuben Keehan, Ruth McDougall and Tarun Nagesh, as well as regionally based co-curators and interlocutors, provide rich interpretations that engage readers with the artworks and artists’ communities. Themes that emerge include care for natural and urban environments, intergenerational experiences of migration and labour, and nuanced approaches to storytelling, materials and technique.
