Book Review: Maggie: Or, A Man and a Woman Walk into a Bar

Maggie: Or, A Man and a Woman Walk into a Bar
by Katie Yee

Funny novels about sad things are a rare joy, and this is one of the best I’ve read in a long time. Katie Yee describes the calamitous events in one woman’s life with a light touch, but her beautifully crafted prose is full of power. She somehow creates a main character who is completely relatable and yet unique at the same time. The wonderful female friendship at the heart of the story makes the novel dance along – the characters are just really good company. Stoic, brave and hilarious. In fact, I miss them all! Even the awful husband!

I curled up with this book on a Saturday morning after a terrible week and by Saturday night I was out on the town. This book is a delight. For fans of Sorrow and Bliss by Meg Mason, We All Want Impossible Things by Catherine Newman and Heartburn by Norah Ephron.
