When five family members had a chance encounter with an expedition’s cache of food in Huxley Forks Hut, one of them decided to tramp the full length of the South Island.
This is the story of the who, why, when, where and how of this 2100 kilometre excursion, near the main divide, from Cape Farewell in the Kahurangi National Park, to Long Point, the southernmost part of Fiordland.
The eight-year journey started with friends, but gradually more and more members of the extended family were pleased to have another adventure in the mountains. On a niece’s prompting, 35 family members, spanning seven decades, all came together on the last three-day tramp to see this journey to its end.
