ANYONE CAN USE MAGIC – IF THEY CAN AFFORD THE PRICE . . .

In a world where everything magical is bought up and controlled by the super rich – Stephen Oakwood has inherited a natural talent for magic. Plunged by his father’s disappearance into a glittering world of scheming dynasties, warring patriarchs and vicious scions, Stephen must navigate magical high society and learn to control his gifts.

Dangerous enemies await the Oakwood heir, and even more dangerous allies: if Stephen cannot master his magic quickly and learn to distinguish friend from foe, his name may end up on the missing persons list, just like his father.

An Inheritance of Magic
By Benedict Jacka
Review by Alethea

As Jacka explains in the Author's Note, this book is very much an introduction to his new series. It takes it's time to explain the basics of this modern world of magic and how it works; both the magic system itself, and the society that has evolved around it. Despite the introductory nature of the story, it was still incredibly engaging as we followed the main character's scramble to understand this new and dangerous world that suddenly took an interest in him, as well as to gain enough power and knowledge to begin protecting himself and his cat. If you enjoy other urban fantasy authors like Ben Aaronovitch or Jim Butcher and want a story that was more serious and detailed in its magical world building, definitely give Benedict Jacka a go. I will certainly be keeping an eye on this series over the coming years.
