The Maiden

I thoroughly enjoyed this compelling fictional re-imagining of a real murder case set in 1679 Edinburgh.
The story is told through the eyes of two female protagonists on the opposite spectrum of society, and as I read their stories, I found myself engaging with each one.
Once I finished the book, it left me thinking about the so-narrow places women were allowed to occupy in society throughout much of history. In this respect, despite its historical setting, this is a contemporary novel.
