Book Review: The Dark Queens

The Dark Queens
by Shelley Puhak
Review by Marija
Before this book, I knew very little of this time-period in history (6th century Merovingian France), and the two Queens, and rivals – Brunhild and Fredegund. Puhak is a very skilled writer, and sets the stage marvellously. The story reads as a fast-paced novel, and I thoroughly enjoyed the ride. With a caveat. There are more than a few moments where the characters take on a modern feel. Written records of this time period are scarce, and in order to flesh out the story, Puhak seems to have taken creative liberties. So, read and enjoy it, but do remember that this is a historical non-fiction narrative and not necessarily a purely academic read.
