Nine Girls by Stacy Gregg
Review by Alex A
This was an engrossing, moving, excellent kiwi coming-of-age-adventure. It’s the 1980s in Ngāruawāhia, and Titch is investigating tapu buried treasure, navigating new friendship, family myths and historical rivalries. Through a Taniwha called Pan, she learns the early colonial history of her whanau and her home. This book is teeming with kiwi nostalgia – think Taika Waititi’s “Boy” but with a female protagonist. Funny, intriguing, moving- I loved it!
