A stunning novel set in an ambiguous alternative 1920s, full of alchemy, underdogs and an endearing slow-burn romance. This low-stakes YA fantasy is descriptive and cozy, with a rickety small town and lush forests. I loved the focus on internal dialogue, and development of ideas around race and religion throughout. A delightful read!
