About the event

Calling all young readers!

You are cordially invited to Telling Tales on Saturday the 11th of October to celebrate Bookshop Day! We have a plethora of special offers on in the shop to celebrate the joy of good books. Join the party any time between 10am and 5pm in our stores at Five Lanes, 120 Hereford Street. There will be spot prizes, an I-Spy Window, special appearances by local authors, $10 Lucky Dip books, character-themed dress-ups and the chance to win one of three awesome bookish prizes! If you’re looking for things for grown-ups to do, make sure you check out what’s happening across the courtyard at Scorpio Books as well.

  • This year Telling Tales is giving away a BOOKSTACK to three lucky customers! Every in-store purchase earns you one entry form- just don’t forget to place it in the entry box of your choice! There will be something for every age, from 0-13. These awesome prizes will be drawn after trading closes at 5pm on Bookshop Day.
  • Our big windows are set to be transformed into a giant I Spy Window! Hidden within will be some cheeky penguin mates to spot (thanks to our friends at Penguin Books). Can you find them all?
  • Bookshop Day is about celebrating your local bookshop. Share why you love what we do, and you can go in the draw to receive one of four prizes of $250 in Booksellers Book Tokens, courtesy of Booksellers Aotearoa New Zealand. All you need to do is fill in a special Love Your Bookshop Postcard at our in-store activity station. Write the reasons why you love your local bookstore on the postcard, hand it in to us, and we’ll send it in to Booksellers Aotearoa New Zealand after Bookshop Day.
  • We will have $10 Lucky Dip books available for one day only*! Wrapped and decorated with clues as to age and topic, snap up these great deals before they’re all gone.
  • From 11am, swing by the shop to meet your favourite local authors. This event is free- our special guests will be announced soon! Stay tuned for the update.
  • There will be a Make a Bookmark table set up in the shop- come along with your craftiest ideas and create something amazing!
  • There will be heaps of spot prizes on the day*. Bonus points for dressing up as your favourite book character!
  • Have you got a wallet filled with old Scorpio Books loyalty cards? Lucky you- Loyalty Card Amnesty is back, exclusively for Bookshop Day. Bring in your expired loyalty cards and we will treat them as valid. Terms and conditions apply.

*While Stocks Last.

Bookshop Day is run by the Booksellers Association of New Zealand to encourage book lovers, like you, to celebrate your local bookshop. The artwork this year is by Donovan Bixley, who took our themes of Community, Hope and Fun and created these masterpieces. Keep an eye on the Booksellers Association of New Zealand website and their social media for updates on how you can celebrate Bookshop Day around the country. We can’t wait to celebrate 10 years of Bookshop Day with you!
