Book Review: Tokyo Fears Rhapsody

Tokyo Fears Rhapsody

What a delightfully goofy story! Following in the footsteps of series like Kaiju No.8 and One-Punch Man, Tokyo Fears Rhapsody focusses on Hachiro, a monster tailor-made to be the terror of humanity; but all he wants to do is eat sweets in peace!

This series is short, sweet and a whole lot of fun. With only a few volumes out so far, it is as easy to consume as popcorn – and just as tasty! Hachiro is a fantastic protagonist – the wannabe gourmet is willing to work a 9-5 job if it means he gets to have ice cream and other tasty treats (#relatable).

While at times a touch simplistic, the art and character design of this series are nothing to sneeze at. I adored the design of the mad scientist character who created Hachiro; a chilling combination of Frankenstein and his monster, a bizarre patchwork of limbs and skin.

This is not a manga to read if you want to take it seriously. But if you are a fan of slapstick comedy, loveable idiots and bizarre character designs, this is a series for you.
