This is one of the most beautiful graphic novels I have ever read. Wix and Pict are young mice who are trying to survive after all the humans have mysteriously vanished. As food stocks in their colony start to run low, they venture outside to try to scavenge more – but danger is everywhere for two small rodents.

As they travel, they meet a gentle moose, some conniving crows, a group of very odd beavers and a trio of strange foxes. Slowly, we piece together that a great calamity lead to humanity’s extinction and the very long winter that our young mice are struggling to survive.

While the story itself is wonderful, I doubt it would have been as impactful without the absolutely breathtaking art. Every character is so distinct; the wolves are ominous and leering, the mice are so cute and Atlas the moose is gargantuan when compared to our tiny leads. The settings all feel enormous, with beautiful lighting, creeping foliage and dynamic weather that reflect the tumultuous times our main duo are living in.

This is a gripping, thrilling story of survival and community, all wrapped up in a gorgeously illustrated package. Perfect for readers both young and old, this is great for fans of Warriors and Watership Down.
