Raising Hare
by Chloe Dalton
Review by Bel
Raising Hare was a hot contender on the Women’s Prize for Nonfiction shortlist this year, and it’s now won the 2025 Wainwright Prize for Nature Writing. It was also hands-down one of my favourite reads this year. I must admit to being skeptical in the beginning – thinking a book about a furry little creature might run the risk of being sappy – but Dalton’s prose is crisp, taut and had me absolutely in her thrall. She remains curious, intelligent, and thoughtful, even when she’s utterly obsessed, and going to extraordinary lengths to protect the animal’s wildness. The respect she has for the hare is humbling, and might challenge you to view your surroundings differently.
A thought-provoking read – perfect if you need a meditative antidote to modern times. For fans of H is for Hawk by Helen Macdonald, and Wilding by Isabella Tree.
