Book Review: Careless People

Careless People

Careless People reads like a dark dystopian novel, filled with out-of-control egos, a manipulative and self-serving leadership (in this case Facebook, or Meta, as it is now), whose only goal is more -users, money, and power. The author joins FB in 2012 as a young, bright-eyed and bushy-tailed young 20-something whose idealism admittedly sometimes veers into naïveté. It is her story, told only from her perspective. It may be argued that this gives it a somewhat unbalanced skew. However, I don’t think that balance is the goal here. The machinations of this enormous company are almost too big to grasp, both within the organisation, and their dealings with their customers (users), advertisers, and governments. It was certainly eye-opening, and I would readily recommend it to anyone who is a social media user.
