An Inheritance of Magic
By Benedict Jacka
Review by Alethea
As Jacka explains in the Author’s Note, this book is very much an introduction to his new series. It takes it’s time to explain the basics of this modern world of magic and how it works; both the magic system itself, and the society that has evolved around it. Despite the introductory nature of the story, it was still incredibly engaging as we followed the main character’s scramble to understand this new and dangerous world that suddenly took an interest in him, as well as to gain enough power and knowledge to begin protecting himself and his cat. If you enjoy other urban fantasy authors like Ben Aaronovitch or Jim Butcher and want a story that was more serious and detailed in its magical world building, definitely give Benedict Jacka a go. I will certainly be keeping an eye on this series over the coming years.
