Book Review: A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder

A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder
By Holly Jackson
Review by Alex P

This book has been talked about and sold out for ages now, and with a new television adaption, the frenzy for it has only grown. I had never even heard of this author, but all of a sudden, customers were asking for it several times a day and we could barely keep stock of it on the shelves. So, I took the plunge and decided to give it a go. I now understand why there is such a big hype around it. It’s a classic, twisty murder mystery set in modern day. Holly Jackson’s characters are all people you would know in your daily life, they are so realistic and perfectly endearing. She uses words in new ways you would never think of, just the way she uses language makes this book worth a read. The plot is well paced and believable, it really does feel like something that could really happen with a small-town murder. There are no shocking action scenes or epic gunfights, just good old-fashioned-plucky detective work and a kid who refuses to give up. Despite some heavy topics, it feels weirdly wholesome and is like an updated version of an Agatha Christie novel. Recommended for ages 14+
