Gideon the Ninth
Tamsyn Muir
Review by Alex P
If the book’s tagline of ‘Lesbian Necromancers In Space’ doesn’t get your attention, nothing will. We follow Gideon Nav’s quest to become what is essentially a glorified bodyguard to a snarky emo. This book is equal parts transcendent sci-fi odyssey and crass gutter humour and I love it. Naturally, it may take a little while to wrap your head around this enmeshment of two very different genres (it took me the first 100 pages) but it’s well worth the investment. Gideon is hands down my favourite character in sci-fi, and Tamsyn Muir is truly a one-of-a-kind author. She’s from somewhere in Auckland, but we can forgive her for that since she’s made such a memorable book. Read it, The Locked Tomb awaits you.
