Montaigne’s ‘Essais’, meaning ‘trials’ or ‘attempts’ in the original French, were the foundation of the literary form which would become the English essay. However, unlike the work of many of his contemporaries, Montaigne’s work as a scholar, traveller and humanist remains accessible and uniquely relevant to today. Highly recommend.
