The Forgotten Girls
by Monica Potts
Review by Kazia
An absorbing glimpse into a rural American town mired in unending, cyclical poverty. Potts interweaves compelling sociological research with deeply human anecdotes – replacing grim statistics with names and faces. Potts’ compassion for the people she left behind battles with her apparent desire to separate herself from them; a survivor passing judgement from her refuge, guilt and superiority mixing and bleeding into the pages as the book progresses. An eye-opening and uncomfortable read to challenge society’s apathy.
