SUMMARY:Book Launch | It's Been Six Weeks Since My Last Confession by Peta Mathias
DESCRIPTION:Scorpio Books and Peta Mathias warmly welcome you to a special book launch to celebrate Peta’s new book\, It’s Been Six Weeks Since My Last Confession: Essays on Life. \nThis weekend book launch takes place at 2pm on Saturday 25th October. Join us for a glass of wine and some crisps while Peta regales us with scurrilous stories about her friends\, family\, childhood and anyone else who has made the mistake of crossing her path. \nFree event. All welcome\, refreshments provided. \nPlease send in your RSVP. \nThere will be books for sale on the day for $38.00. \n\nABOUT THE BOOK\n‘Do we really have to have Persian dried rose petals\, Pete? I mean\, on a scale of one to ten\, how essential are they in the dish you’re cooking?’ asks brother Paul with his patient face on. I go blank. How important are rose petals? Is this a trick question? What kind of bullshit supermarket is this anyway? There are 37 million products here. How hard would it have been to throw a few packets of rose petals on the shelf? \nIn this\, her 19th book\, Peta Mathias regales her readers with indiscreet stories from her life – how to deal with anger and temps perdu\, why it’s not a sin to wear black underwear\, how eating sun-drenched food will keep you young and beautiful forever\, how to open your eyes with a knife and what happens when you go on holiday with five A-types. If Peta can survive her life while wearing designer clothes and red lipstick\, so can you. You don’t have to be a recovered Catholic to tell the truth. \n\nABOUT THE AUTHOR\nPeta Mathias MNZM is a respected and prolific New Zealand chef\, author\, entertainer and broadcaster\, who writes about food and travel and hosts gastronomic tours in the South of France\, Puglia\, Basque Country and India.

SUMMARY:Book Launch | It's What He Would've Wanted by Nick Ascroft
DESCRIPTION:Scorpio Books and Te Herenga Waka University Press warmly welcome you to the Ōtautahi Christchurch launch of new poetry collection It’s What He Would’ve Wanted by Nick Ascroft. This event will feature readings from the author\, as well as readings from supporting poets Erik Kennedy\, Stacey Teague\, Rebecca Hawkes and Ashleigh Young. All welcome\, refreshments provided. \nFree event. Please send in your RSVP. \nIt’s What He Would’ve Wanted is on sale now! \n\nABOUT THE BOOK\nWhat would he have wanted? As little fuss as possible. But\, reading between the lines: a little help. All the latest gossip and complaints. An arse that is not wrong. Opulence. One leap from the rope ladder. The final word. \nIt’s What He Would’ve Wanted is the sixth book of poetry from the author of the acclaimed The Stupefying (‘the very best book of poetry of 2022’ said Newsroom). In this hilarious and affecting new work\, Nick Ascroft writes of lost friends\, new frailties\, new braveries\, and being stuck in an organ pipe during a recital and not wanting to bother anyone about it. Yes\, there are poems of cycling into dead-end utility holes but also poems of trembling resolve and arriving at work as aged as the night sky after completing the morning school drop-off. This is the best collection yet by one of the most exciting and mercurial poets writing in Aotearoa today. \n\nABOUT THE AUTHOR\nNick Ascroft is the author of five previous poetry collections with Te Herenga Waka University Press\, most recently The Stupefying (2022) and Moral Sloth (2019). Living in Thorndon\, he is a public servant and the president of Scrabble Wellington.

SUMMARY:Adventure Night | Double Book Launch with Vanessa Croft & Peter Ryan
DESCRIPTION:Scorpio Books and Bateman Books warmly welcome you to a special DOUBLE book launch and author talk! Join us to celebrate the publication of Where In All the World\, a new novel by Vanessa Croft\, and Riding the Echo Down\, a new essay collection by Peter Ryan. The theme of the night is\, adventure! There will be giveaways\, books for sale and lots of fun to be had. \nAll welcome\, refreshments provided. Please send in your RSVP. \n\nABOUT WHERE IN ALL THE WORLD BY VANESSSA CROFT\nHarriet Watson dreams of a life beyond the Canterbury plains of 1890s New Zealand. When a celebrated English explorer sets his sights on her\, she is swept into a grand romance and a far greater deception. Determined to make a name for himself\, Curtis De Courcey undertakes a perilous expedition across Africa\, returning a hero to claim Harriet as his bride. But as whispers of scandal and cruelty gather\, Harriet finds herself isolated\, controlled and increasingly aware that true happiness may lie far from the direction she was seeking. From the Rakaia hills to the drawing rooms of London\, through the wilds of East Africa and the brutal heart of the Congo Free State\, Where in All the World traces one woman’s journey through betrayal\, resilience and self-discovery. Faced with the violence of empire and the constrictions of Victorian marriage\, Harriet must summon extraordinary courage to reclaim her life — and her freedom. \nFor readers of The Signature of All Things and The Light Between Oceans\, this unforgettable debut is a story of endurance\, awakening and fierce reclamation of self. \n\nABOUT VANESSA CROFT\nVanessa Croft is an Aotearoa-based historical fiction writer with a passion for bringing history to life. Born in Australia\, her childhood was spent in Nigeria and Papua New Guinea as a civil engineer’s daughter\, and these remote locations fostered her love of travelling\, writing and the natural world. With a background in humanities and research\, she is an avid armchair historian with a passion for Victorian-era Aotearoa. She lives in the spectacular South Island on a small farm that once bred Clydesdales and spends her time with her adventurer husband\, two teens and far too many books. Where In All the World is Vanessa’s debut novel\, inspired by her belief that Aotearoa New Zealand’s past is rich in stories waiting to be told. \n\nABOUT RIDING THE ECHO DOWN BY PETER RYAN\nIntrepid hunter and adventurer Peter Ryan takes you around the world in a collection of lavishly illustrated essays on hunting and the natural world from a master of outdoor literature. Explore the lives of the great hunters of the past – from the primeval forests of early New Zealand to Africa\, Asia and the Americas – to the present and future of wilderness hunting. Riding the Echo Down is an essential read for fans of hunting stories and outdoor adventure. \n\nABOUT PETER RYAN\nAfter early years in New Zealand and Australia\, Peter volunteered for an aid project in southern Africa which led to an epic series of solo journeys across Africa and South America. He has hunted and fished across four continents and didn’t get lost on some of them. Peter’s writing and images have appeared in the world’s finest sporting journals for many years\, and have been translated into several languages. His previous books – Wild South\, Hunting New Zealand and Hunting Life: Moments of Truth – launched to critical acclaim. Peter lives on a small farm in New Zealand’s South Island with his wife\, daughter and son.

SUMMARY:Book Launch | Eddie Sparkle's Bridal Taxi by Frankie McMillan
DESCRIPTION:Scorpio Books and Canterbury University Press warmly welcome you to the launch of Eddie Sparkle’s Bridal Taxi by local author Frankie McMillan. \nFrankie McMillan is one of the leading writers of the short-short form in Aotearoa New Zealand\, and Eddie Sparkle’s Bridal Taxi\, her seventh book\, sees her at her best. The prose poems and small stories here demonstrate exceptional range\, examining the tiniest psychodramas but also meditating on drownings and shootings and infidelities and nuclear warfare. McMillan finds the unusual in the everyday\, and she is equally at home with lovers embracing in the fields and with reclusive aunts fading away in poky old houses. This is writing that reveals humans working out how to be their ridiculous and beautiful little selves. This is writing that feels like thinking. \nAll welcome\, refreshments provided. Free event. \nPlease send in your RSVP. \nThere will be books for sale on the night for $29.99. \n\nABOUT THE BOOK\n“This dextrous\, inventive collection is a masterclass on the possibilities of form. A writer of profound imaginative curiosity\, McMillan interrogates real and surreal worlds – animals\, angels\, performers\, thieves – with wit\, sharp insight and a delight in the small\, strange moments of lives.”— Paula Morris \n“Frankie McMillan hides the mystery of both our deepest psychological wounds and our most valued intimacies\, inside poems and stories that enchant\, the way intricate\, miniature\, singing mechanical birds might: but beware\, they are sharp-eyed\, and can bite with the teeth of truth.” — Emma Neale \n\nABOUT THE AUTHOR\nFrankie McMillan is the author of four previous books from Canterbury University Press. The Father of Octopus Wrestling was chosen by The Spinoff as one of the ten best New Zealand fiction books of 2019 and was shortlisted for the New Zealand Society of Authors Heritage Book Awards. My Mother and the Hungarians (2016) was longlisted for the Ockham New Zealand Book Awards in fiction. She has won numerous awards and creative writing residencies\, including the Ursula Bethell Residency at the University of Canterbury (2014)\, the University of Auckland Residency at the Michael King Writers Centre (2017) and the NZSA Peter and Dianne Beatson Fellowship (2019). Had the virus run the same course as it did in the US and UK\, by March 2023 there would have been more than 17\,000 fatalities. Instead\, Aotearoa achieved one of the lowest health burdens in the world\, while enduring fewer restrictions than almost any other country in the OECD. How did we get here? And at what cost? \nIn The Covid Response\, Shaun Hendy offers an insider’s account of New Zealand’s science-driven strategy for confronting the global pandemic. As his team at Te Pūnaha Matatini springs into action\, he takes us behind the scenes in real time. He unpacks the science informing rapid\, high-stakes decisions\, evaluating the costs of those decisions and asking what lessons they offer for the future.

SUMMARY:Author Talk | An Uncommon Land by Catherine Knight
DESCRIPTION:Scorpio Books and Totara Press warmly invite you to join us for an author talk. An Uncommon Land: From an Ancestral Past of Enclosure Towards a Regenerative Future by Catherine Knight is out now. The author will be in-store for one night only to discuss her latest publication with Dr Paul Dalziel of Wellbeing Economy Alliance Aotearoa. \nAll welcome\, refreshments provided. Please send in your RSVP. There will be books for sale on the night for $49.99. \n\nABOUT THE BOOK\nAn Uncommon Land is a story of enclosure\, dispossession\, colonisation and – ultimately – hope for a better future. Through the lens of her ancestors’ stories\, Catherine Knight throws light on the genesis and evolution of the commons\, its erosion through enclosure and the ascendency of private property in parallel with the rise of capitalism – a history that has indelibly shaped New Zealand society and its landscape. \nLike other European settlers\, the lives and future prosperity of the author’s ancestors had their foundations in war\, land appropriation and environmental destruction – but in their histories lie glimmerings of the potentiality of commons: tantalising hints of an alternative path to a re-commoned\, regenerative future. From a past of enclosure\, resource exploitation and exponential growth\, this book shines light on the potentiality of a different future\, taking inspiration from our collective history. \n\nABOUT THE AUTHOR\nDr Catherine Knight is an award‑winning environmental historian and author of several acclaimed books including New Zealand’s Rivers: An environmental history\, Beyond Manapouri: 50 years of environmental politics in New Zealand and Ravaged Beauty: An environmental history of the Manawatu. Catherine works in public policy and is an Honorary Research Associate at Massey University. She has a strong interest in post-growth economy and writes on these topics on Newsroom\, The Spinoff and on Substack. \nHer newest work\, An Uncommon Land\, weaves together ancestral family stories and wider social and environmental history to trace the process of enclosure and the rise of private property\, and offers a compelling vision for a regenerative\, re‑commoned future. \n\nABOUT THE FACILITATOR\nDr Paul Dalziel has published 11 books\, 84 journal articles and more than 400 publications on his research. He received five awards from Lincoln University for excellence in teaching\, excellence in research and for contributions to the statutory responsibility of universities as critic and conscience of society. He has also received awards from the Regional Studies Association\, from the Australia and New Zealand Regional Studies Association International and the New Zealand Association of Economists. \nAfter retiring as Professor of Economics at Lincoln University at the end of 2024\, Paul joined the Wellbeing Economy Alliance Aotearoa staff team as Research Economist.

He writes with open eyes about long COVID\, living wages\, self-medication and sea temperatures. Sick Power Trip is Kennedy’s most personal and vulnerable book yet. \nAll welcome\, refreshments provided. Please send in your RSVP. \nPre-order your copy of Sick Power Trip with Scorpio Books today! \n\nABOUT THE BOOK\nIf it feels like we’re stuck in a post-truth moment\, Kennedy reminds us that some things remain true and vital: self-care\, empathy\, and solidarity. \n‘Erik Kennedy’s Sick Power Trip thrillingly challenges and dissects the horrors of the world piling outside our front doors. This isn’t just a story of heroes versus villains: it’s a sage reminder for us to question where we stand and what we’re capable of as individuals. I adore Kennedy’s sharp wit and erudite humour\, and his ability to walk the line between optimism and pessimism. This collection is a masterful example of taking back power one poem at a time.’ –Chris Tse \n‘Erik Kennedy’s manic narratives and twisted comedies square up to power. By turns angry\, exasperated\, chuckling\, despairing\, he gives voice to “the clammy\, suffering\, sweltry\, cynical\, burned-out\, / downhearted\, vulnerable people”.’ —James Brown \n‘Sick Power Trip takes a scalpel to the systems of power\, capital\, and warfare that we live with. Kennedy has an impressive knack for finding the line between didactic and forgiving\, striking a note of urgency that is desperately needed in this time of crises. With wry humour and a distinct playfulness\, this new collection offers not a balm for the world but the courage to dismantle it.’ —Ash Davida Jane \n\nABOUT THE AUTHOR\nErik Kennedy is the author of two previous books of poems\, both with Te Herenga Waka University Press: the Ockham-shortlisted There’s No Place Like the Internet in Springtime (2018) and Another Beautiful Day Indoors (2022). Originally from New Jersey\, he lives in Ōtautahi Christchurch.

SUMMARY:Book Launch | Touch Screen by Philip Armstrong
DESCRIPTION:Scorpio Books and Otago University Press warmly welcome you to the Ōtautahi Christchurch launch of Touch Screen by Philip Armstrong. In this absorbing collection the poet dismantles this now ubiquitous term and helps us see its component parts afresh – ‘touch’ and ‘screen’ strangely reconfigured in today’s complex technological world. \nAll welcome\, refreshments provided. Please send in your RSVP. \nPre-order your copy of Touch Screen with Scorpio Books today.\nRRP: $30 \n\nABOUT THE BOOK\nThe word ‘touchscreen’ entered the English language in the early 1970s to describe a computer display screen that also functions as an input device operated by touching its surface. In poems that range from the personal lyric to retellings of myths and stories long held in the human imagination\, Armstrong explores the rapidly evolving interface between human and non-human worlds. Touch Screen brings us face to face with being alive here and now\, and asks the urgent question: Can you feel it? \nMid-day mid-week mid-scroll and touch\nscreened far too long\, I’m struck so flat\nI’m lying face-up on the carpet\nwhen something reveals itself: above me\nshowing only when my eyes drift\nhangs a single thread of spider silk. \nFrom ‘Jacob’s Ladder’ \n‘Armstrong’s nimble voice is both hilarious and profound.’ – Anne Kennedy \n\nABOUT THE AUTHOR\nPhilip Armstrong lives in Ōtautahi Christchurch and teaches literature\, writing and human-animal studies at the University of Canterbury. His essay ‘On Tenuous Ground’ won the 2011 Landfall Essay Prize\, and his first poetry collection Sinking Lessons (Otago University Press 2020) was the winner of the 2019 Kathleen Grattan Poetry Award.

SUMMARY:Book Party | Ghosts On Every Corner by Ghostcat\, Reuben Woods and Dave Richards
DESCRIPTION:Scorpio Books and Ghostcat invite you to join us for the celebration of Ghosts On Every Corner\, the exhibition publication of the eponymous project. Four years of detailed research and meticulous work in miniature has gone into creating scale models of thirteen iconic pre-earthquake Christchurch buildings for Ghosts on Every Corner\, a project by Ghostcat – also known as Ōtautahi scratch build artist Mike Beer. The collection is a labour of love and has been a journey of nostalgia and discovery\, documented in this hardcover book that accompanies the exhibition. \nAll welcome\, refreshments provided. Please send in your RSVP. There will be books for sale on the night for $145.00. \n\nABOUT THE BOOK\n\n\n\n\n\nGhosts On Every Corner is independently published in collaboration with Blueprint. With text by Dr Reuben Woods\, art historian and creative director of Watch This Space\, and imagery by Christchurch photographer Dave Richards\, Ghosts on Every Corner is a uniquely insightful record of monuments\, memories\, and moments of Christchurch history otherwise lost to the passages of time and seismic activity. The book features stunning photographs of the small scale recreations\, which include Smiths Bookshop\, Echo Records\, Wizards Arcade\, Java Café\, the Cathedral Square Police Kiosk\, and the Deans Ave Sales Yard building. As well as studio shots\, Dave Richards photographed the miniature buildings in a selection of artful locations around the city\, from train tracks at sunset to a moodily-lit underground supermarket car park. \nGhosts on Every Corner explores our recollections and connections with places and the past. This book needed to be tactile\, to hold literal weight\, and as an object it had to do justice to the combination of Ghostcat’s art and design\, Dr Reuben Woods’ words\, and Dave Richards’ photography\, along with the stories of our community collected within its pages. This created a sense of responsibility to the artists\, the city\, and the reader\, which was present in each decision made during the production process. \nThe official launch of both the book and exhibition was held as a special one-off exhibition preview in Christ Church Cathedral on Friday 21 March. Guided tours were held throughout the day to view Ghostcat’s buildings in the surroundings of the Cathedral\, currently in a state of ongoing repair. The heavily reinforced walls and light-filled space served as a unique setting in which to contemplate the ephemeral. \nRead more about the book here on Blueprint’s website. \n\nABOUT THE AUTHORS\nGhostcat is an artist in Christchurch New Zealand. He has spent the last 4 years making scratch built iconic buildings that used to exist here in Christchurch pre earthquake.  The project has been a labour of love to the city. \nDr Reuben Woods is an art historian\, writer and curator. His PhD thesis explored graffiti and street art within post-earthquake Christchurch. He also serves as creative director and lead tour guide for Watch This Space. \nDave Richards had his first work experience as a photographer at the age of fifteen for a local newspaper.  What was originally a two week learning opportunity has spanned into a lasting and highly successful career. Based in Christchurch\, New Zealand – Dave thrives on collaborating with others and pushing the envelope to create truly outstanding work. Specialising in portraiture\, fashion\, and commercial – Dave has had the pleasure of working with names such as U2\, Coca-Cola\, Walt Disney and Sony.

SUMMARY:Book Launch: Tony Fomison by Mark Forman
DESCRIPTION:Scorpio Books and Auckland University Press warmly invite you to the Ōtautahi Christchurch launch of Tony Fomison: Life of the Artist by Mark Forman. In a career spanning three decades\, Tony Fomison (1939-1990) produced some of New Zealand’s most artistically and culturally significant paintings and drawings\, the backdrop of which was a life – inseparable from his art – of enduring intrigue. Speakers include Murray Horton\, a friend of the artist\, Sally Blundell and the author Mark Forman. \nAll welcome\, refreshments provided. Please send in your RSVP. \n\nABOUT THE BOOK\nThrough the darkness and the light\, delve into the story of one of New Zealand’s most influential twentieth-century artists. \n‘As a boy Tony had drawn maps and diagrams and medieval battle scenes. He’d read fairy tales and been enchanted by local sites of Māori history. As a young man he was a vagrant on the streets of Paris\, was twice imprisoned\, spent time in a mental hospital\, battled destructive addictions\, and experienced unrequited love and loneliness. All of this would become the underworld of his art\, the subterranean realm where he could dwell so as to create work that expressed something of the human condition. But it was always far wider than just his own story. Endlessly curious about Pacific and Māori history and art\, and enchanted by European Renaissance art\, he wanted to find a new visual language for what it meant to live in the Pacific; he wanted to make room at the back of our heads.’\n— From the introduction by the author \nA man of multitudes and a self-perceived outsider\, Fomison was a son\, sibling and lover; activist\, archaeologist and scholar; trickster\, addict and disrupter; and – above all else – an artist who shed light on the human condition and reimagined life in Aotearoa. \nIn this compelling biography\, developed over more than a decade\, Mark Forman draws on archival material and interviews with more than 150 people including Fomison’s family and close friends\, leading contemporary artists\, political activists\, and art professionals. The result is a comprehensive yet lively and accessible biography that reveals the man and his art to a new generation of readers. \n\nABOUT THE AUTHOR\nMark Forman is a writer based in Onehunga\, Auckland. His doctoral thesis formed the basis of his first book\, a scholarly work published in 2011 by Cambridge University Press. Forman’s personal interests in New Zealand contemporary art\, biography and social history were the drivers for this project\, for which he has been awarded a Whiria Te Mahara New Zealand History Grant\, the 2024 Marti and Gerrard Friedlander Charitable Trust publishing grant\, and a runner-up placement in the CLNZ / NZSA Writers’ Award.
